MY CAREER

I grew up in Bern and still live there today. When I was a bright young thing of 16 I left the parental home to see the world. The plan was for 2-3 weeks, but in the end I travelled for more than a year. When I ran out of money I always found casual work. I made my way to China on the Silk Road, then my parents paid for my flight back from Shanghai. The foreign cultures and eating habits on this trip fascinated me and motivated me to take an MSc in Food Science and a MAS in Nutrition and Health at the ETH in Zürich. Nowadays I work as a freelance nutritional adviser and also have some commissions as an innovation consultant in the food industry. Please sign on for my newsletter Nutrition Inside.
From my trip I also brought back my three hobbies. I was already interested in the martial arts of the Far East and had even taken some lessons at school. That gave me the self confidence to carry on travelling. After my return I began intensive karate training. Today I am in the national team and give courses to new recruits.
When I was travelling I was able to make myself understood with my hands and feet, but was unable to read – apart from the ubiquitous comics. These days I still treat myself to subscriptions to comics from all sorts of countries and devour them with the utmost pleasure.
There is no doubt that the last of my three hobbies is the most difficult. On my trip I learnt that every nation has its traditional musical instruments and got a bee in my bonnet about playing the alpenhorn. Then my godfather gave me an alpenhorn as a present and I’ve been practising conscientiously ever since. I seek solitude in nature so that I can practise. The alpenhorn is an incredibly difficult instrument and therefore also a fascinating one. I am a great admirer of Eliana Burki; she has perfect mastery of the instrument as well as the courage to play in modern musical styles.
