AGROSCOPE LIEBEFELD-POSIEUX RESEARCH STATION ALP
We’ve already been several times to ALP in Liebefeld. Ueli, Reto and Hans-Peter – those really are three crazy guys – took us round, and we were very impressed by the work they're doing there. We specially liked their pilot plants and culture production, though found the various items of analytical equipment rather bewildering. We were struck by the enthusiasm of the many creative young people working there. ALP is really keen to use research for practical purposes. We were both able to implement several good Liebefeld developments in our work. The joint planning and implementation of the 5th IDF Symposium on Cheese Ripening in Bern with Ueli, Reto and Hans-Peter was an unforgettable experience for us.

Current ALP highlights:

• Special edition of ALPscience on the 5th IDF Symposium on Cheese Ripening, 9-13 March 2008 in Bern
• Great advances have been made in certifying the origin of cheese (publication available in October 2008) and meat products (publication by Franke et al).
• The new method of producing cheese from highly concentrated milk was implemented for the first time (www.hf-finnatec.com/media/Infoblatt.pdf)

Their home page www.alp.admin.ch is very user-friendly, but unfortunately mostly only available in German or French. But things won't change much as long as the EU refuses to join Switzerland.
